The Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC) is dedicated to preventing cancer and to reducing its burden where it cannot yet be prevented. We achieve this by developing and implementing innovative cancer prevention research and outreach programs to deliver a comprehensive arsenal for defeating cancer.
Our Environmental Research Group is currently looking for a Research Associate to join their team in our Berkeley location.
This unique role is designed to provide expertise in toxicology and exposure assessment for a study aimed at identifying occupational chemical exposures relevant to breast cancer risk among California women. Major responsibilities include: searching for relevant existing data on occupational chemical exposures; reviewing and interpreting data to identify potential occupations of concern, to identify key data gaps, and to summarize potential prevalence of occupational exposures. Later phases of this study will require incumbent to coordinate the collection and analysis of environmental and biologic sampling in a selected targeted occupational study of California women.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
• To coordinate and perform exposure assessment activities and analyses for environmental and occupational epidemiology projects. These activities include: providing consultation to Research Scientists and staff on exposure assessment methods, toxicology, and other aspects of environmental health; coordinating laboratory assays, and conducting data collection, management and analysis.
• To contribute to the development, writing, and preparation of manuscripts, oral presentations, and grant proposals.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
1. Under general direction of Research Scientists, executes project tasks related to the assessment and analysis of occupational and environmental exposures for epidemiologic research. Data resources for these efforts may include: established lists of endocrine disruptors and mammary carcinogens, occupation/industry exposure prevalence data, large environmental databases (such as air pollutants, traffic density, and agricultural pesticides), biological specimens, environmental monitoring data, questionnaires, and geographic information systems (GIS).
2. Assists in the development of exposure assessment protocols and questionnaire design for the use in epidemiologic and related studies.
3. Coordinates with collaborators and contractors to ensure data collection protocols are consistent with study aims and objectives.
4. Develops quality assurance project plans for environmental data collection and provides oversight of quality assurance on such data.
5. Contributes to the development of grant proposals by providing environmental health expertise to develop and design exposure assessment strategies in epidemiologic and related studies.
6. Conducts or works with programmer analysts to conduct data management, data linkages, and analyses for selected projects.
7. Contributes to the preparation and writing of scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations at scientific meetings, and other dissemination materials on research findings.
8. Uses the Internet, libraries, and other resources to identify, review, and summarize pertinent literature and other data as needed for projects.
9. Carries out related assignments as appropriate.

• Advanced degree (e.g., MS, MPH) in environmental health sciences, epidemiology, or related discipline required, and a minimum of one year of relevant research experience, preferably in environmental or occupational health sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in exposure assessment activities using biological specimens, environmental monitoring, and/or questionnaires. Some laboratory experience desirable.
• Experience using SAS or other related statistical software and experience in working with large databases.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. High degree of attention to detail and organization required.
• Ability to work independently and to work on multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with other scientific staff.
• Experience with GIS, geocoding, and spatial analysis highly desirable.
• Experience in grant and/or scientific manuscript writing preferred.
